Description & Objectives

Continuing Education Hours: 1 CE for LPC, SW, LMFT, and Psychologists - NBCC Approved

Description: Abuse destroys one's sense of self in a myriad of ways. One way rarely talked about is the victim's sexuality. Intimate partner abuse frequently extends into the bedroom, with many victims sexually assaulted and/or coerced into sexual acts they are not okay with. This wreaks havoc on the victim's sexual identity and even after exiting the abusive relationship she may not know what to do with this aspect of her life. Sometimes there are shame-inducing aspects that she can barely utter. The good news is this can be healed. This session will help the participant understand the harm done in the sexual space, the problems that may arise due to the abuse, and how to help clients reclaim or gain health in this important area.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the ways intimate partner sexual abuse harms a victim's sexual self.
  • Participants will be able to identify problems that arise due to intimate partner sexual abuse.
  • Participants will be able to explain strategies for helping victims reclaim or gain sexual health.
