Description: People with narcissistic tendencies may be less likely to voluntarily seek therapy for themselves, but their victims and family members will often seek services. As caring professionals, we need to have an understanding of how to identify a relationship that may involve a narcissist so that we can appropriately help and advise our clients without causing further harm to a vulnerable person. Traditional relationship advice can often backfire and perpetuate further abuse when applied with a narcissistic partner or family member. Through lecture, case examples, and discussion, this presentation will provide education about the correlation between narcissistic tendencies and abuse, identify common patterns in relationships with narcissistic people, discuss ways to effectively treat a client who is navigating a relationship with this type of person, and advise on how to safely prepare them if they need to leave or cut ties with a narcissistic abuser.

Crystal Williamson

Crystal Williamson has 20 years of experience caring for people in trauma and crisis. She is the owner of Roots Therapy and Consulting, PLLC, located in Southwest Arlington. Crystal specializes in helping adults heal from relational trauma. Prior to going into private practice, she worked with people in a variety of settings including hospitals, non-profits, and mental health facilities. Her credentials include EMDRIA Certification and a certificate in Trauma Therapy from the Trauma Care Institute, a program of Trauma Support Services of North Texas. She is a licensed clinical social worker with supervisor designation for the state of Texas. She received a Master of Science in Social Work degree from University of Texas at Arlington and a BBS in Social Work from Hardin-Simmons University. Crystal lives in Mansfield with her husband and three children.
