Description: Intimate Partner Violence is present in every community although unfortunately many times it goes unreported in the LGBTQIA+ community for a myriad of reasons. This seminar is designed to educate individuals on the barriers the LGBTQIA+ community faces when reporting violence as well as ways to build rapport in order to better serve the community. The seminar will cover common terminology, pronoun use, barriers to reporting and simple things one can do that can make all the difference in ensuring a positive interaction with a survivor of intimate partner violence within the LBGTQIA+ community. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Familiarize the audience with common terminology that may be used. 
  • Identify barriers to reporting present within the LGBTQIA+ community.  
  • Familiarize the audience with pronouns they may encounter. 
  • Understand the difference between implicit and explicit bias. 
  • Identify simple and effective ways to build rapport within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Sabrina Blevins

Sabrina Blevins is a passionate criminal justice professional with experience investigating intimate partner violence and sexual assaults. She is dedicated to educating the criminal justice community on the traumatic effects of intimate partner violence and the methods of investigation that will minimize further trauma to survivors. Sabrina’s experience in law enforcement over the period of 10 years includes time spent investigating street-level narcotics, intimate partner violence, sexual assaults, as well as locating and apprehending violent felons. She holds an Advanced Texas Peace Officers License and has amassed over 4,200 hours of continuing education. Sabrina is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and is devoted to ensuring that survivors from all walks of life receive the care that they so much deserve.
