Description: Many working in the mental health field are intimidated by the criminal justice system. However, when working with trauma survivors, especially sexual assault survivors, you will walk with them as they navigate this system, and they will often turn toward you for guidance. This training will provide an introductory explanation of your role in this system, commonly used terms and vocabulary, the rights your client has, and the range of possible outcomes. Real client stories will be shared to illustrate the subjective experiences of sexual assault survivors in their search for justice.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Learn legal definitions and laws around sexual abuse/assault. 
  • Understand the unique nature of sexual assault compared to other criminal offenses and traumatic  events. 
  • Gain a better understanding of the qualitive experience of reporting a sexual assault and the range of  possible resolutions and types of “justice.”

MA, LMHC Johanna Wender

Johanna Wender is a licensed mental health counselor, child mental health specialist, and clinical supervisor based in Washington State. She has provided therapy to trauma survivors for the past decade using evidence-based practices. Johanna currently works at one of the nation's largest rape crisis centers, where she exclusive treats sexual assault survivors. She also owns Bravura Counseling, PLLC, which focuses on providing mental wellness to first responders, military members, and their families.
