Description & Objectives

Continuing Education Hours: 3 CEs for LPC, SW, LMFT, and Psychologists - NBCC Approved

DescriptionTrauma experienced during childhood can have a significant impact on a child's development and the family system. Untreated trauma symptoms or a continued lack of perceived emotional or physical safety can continue to affect a person into adulthood. These effects can be seen in their health, relationships, self-worth, emotional regulation, and changes in world view. Trauma victims are often misdiagnosed, or their behaviors are misunderstood. It is important to understand the impact of childhood trauma when working with individuals who may have experienced trauma as a child in order to better understand and support them and provide trauma-informed care. This presentation will provide an overview of the impact of trauma on child development, how the family system is affected, and how the continued impact of the trauma affects the person into adulthood.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to define trauma and three ways it impacts child development.

  • Attendees will be able to describe two ways childhood trauma impacts the entire family and how caregivers can mitigate these impacts.

  • Attendees will identify three ways childhood trauma can affect the transition to adulthood.
